THE PRESS CLUB university of Lagos on behalf of the entire students have dissociated themselves from a group of faceless students who have hijacked the peaceful protest organized by the University of Lagos Students against the change of name of the institution to Moshood Abiola University by President Goodluck Jonathan.
University of Lagos is the school of First choice that has distinguished herself in all area in terms of academic excellence and we say categorically that we are not violent students but students who feel that Government should do things in a more constitutional, appropriate and democratic way.
When we say constitutional, we mean following due process which was used to establish the University. The school was established 50 years by an act of Parliament and it is an amendment to this act that can alter the name of the University.
We commend the effort of Mr. President for appreciating the sterling qualities of an hero “Chief M.K.O Abiola” winner of the acclaimed free and fair election in 1993 but it is better a new university is built for that purpose or one of the newly established university should be named after him.
Therefore, our stand as peaceful students is enumerated below;

    1.The council of the university should be duly consulted and carried along in the whole process of changing the name of the school.
    2.The entire students reject the name being given to the school and seek a reversal of the President’s announcement. “University of Lagos” suits better or “Sofoluwe University Lagos” in respect of our Late Vice Chancellor.
    3.UNILAG is a brand name, a reputable name globally recognized and thus many staffs, alumni and Students of the school have been defending this name for the past 50 years.
    4.The president should apologize publicly through a national for the undemocratic way he has handled this issue.
    5.The President should duly honour the Late Vice Chancellor, Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe by building a hostel to be named after him.

Failure to do so will result in UNILAG students gathering to cripple the economy of the country.
We are also warning the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku who used to be a former students’ leader while in school to be careful of his utterances on this issue.
Long live University of First Choice;
Long live University Of Lagos;
Long live Nigeria.
