In a bid to ensure that University Of Lagos is not changed to Moshood Abiola University by President Goodluck Jonathan
The students and alumni of the university had filed a case in federal high court ikoyi and had also been signing an online petition against the move by the Federal Government.
The online petition with the URL: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/referendum-against-unilag-change.html/
currently has more than 11,000 signatures and it is believed that 50,000 signatures may be needed to override the President move.
In a chat with one of the moderators of the petition Tobi Kupoluyi, he confirmed that the three moderators of the online petition are all alumni of College of Medicine, University of Lagos.
He said “The petition, or referendum as we prefer to call it, is genuine. The website allows us to extract the details of the signatures as a printable document which can be presented in court, to the national assembly or to the press. It is a documented evidence of the refusal of the name change.
He further said they had initiated contact with other lawyers especially those that have filed a suit against the FG. ” We got in touch with Barrister Oluyinka Oyeniji, the first lawyer to file a suit. He acknowledged our tool as a powerful one and he also signed it. We have also gotten in touch with the Alumni Association and they have also endorsed it.
He enjoined all students and those who support this cause to drive more traffic to the referendum page, that more signatures will go a long way. We discourage people signing more than once, but each person can get at least 5 people to sign. It is best to have this tool available so when our lawyers need it, it is there for their use. We will appreciate if the current students can increase the awareness of this and share the links on their facebook and twitter pages, BlackBerry and verbally on campus.
You might be encouraged to know that former University of Lagos VC Prof. Ibidapo-Obe already signed this referendum.
You will recall that, President Goodluck Jonathan’s announced during Democracy day speech on the May 29, 2012 that University of Lagos has been changed to Moshood Abiola University.
The decision which the FG describe as a step to honour the Late Moshood Abiola, did not go down well with the students and Staffs of the University as the Student rushed out en-mass to protest against the change of the institution name.
