5th September, 2014.

The attention of The Press Club, Unilag has been drawn to a statement credited to the office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs. Speaking at the handing over of the ULSU constitution to the Vice Chancellor on Wednesday, 3rd September, 2014, Mr. Princewill was alleged to have said that The Press Club was invited to the event.

We categorically state that no form of invitation was extended to The Press Club, either by call, text or email but as campus journalists, we were monitoring the event which, according to the information we got on the day of the inauguration of the constitution draftiing committee, would be held on the 1st of September.

It should be noted that we have been covering events on campus relating to the development of the university as this was the case when the constitution drafting committee was inaugurated. This event was published in The Nation Newspaper (7th August, 2014: page 41) courtesy of The Press Club. The Young Investors Forum that was organized by Investment One in partnership with the Council of Faculty presidents and Student Affairs Division was also published in the Nation Newspaper on the 5th of June, 2014; also, the report of the town hall meeting of the Biobaku students was published yesterday, 4th of September (page 31) in the same national daily.

However, as a media group, we apologise for not having our representatives at the presentation as a grand event of such ought not to slip through our fingers. But, unlike the picture that was painted that The Press Club deliberately avoided the event due to the fact that we could not defend the statement of 29th August, we affirm that this was never the case as The Press Club never panics. The content of the previous statement was put together through vigorous study and deliberations by the members of the editorial team towards a better University of Lagos. We are neither a political nor pressure group. What we stand for is to report, inform, analyse and present developments in the university to the students which for six semesters, we have, against all odds succeeded in doing.

Media organisations gather information from two key areas namely: reporters and sources. As a club, we are driven by the philosophy that information should be within the reach of the students. We hereby call on all stakeholders to join the information train by asking questions from their representatives and school management.

We urge Akokites to resist any attempt to keep them in the dark as the actions of some of the CDC members have portrayed. A CDC member representing the Faculty of Science boasted across the campus how she removed the press statement from notice boards.
We remain undeterred even in the face of these distractions.
